In his first selection for Cannes, Kôji Fukada wins the Jury Prize, Un Certain Regard for his film Harmonium (Fuchi ni Tatsu), which chronicles how a family's life is interrupted when an old friend, recently released from prison, comes to stay with them. In a brief interview about the film, Fukada considers the state of the film industry in Japan, noting:
While there are a host of new talents emerging, we're in dire need of a system that allows people to work and express themselves fully. One of the biggest problems is the lack of unity in the industry back home – it's based on nothing but a set of economic interests. We need to become aware of this rapidly, and to develop the real courage to make the structural reforms necessary for our national film industry to develop.
With this recognition of his film at Cannes, Fukada may be able to realize his hopes for such developments in the Japanese film industry.
